A Lifetime Experience

Why Nepal

With seven UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu and another three elsewhere in Nepal, there is no shortage of places to explore. The unique cultural heritage, blended with Indian and Tibetan influences, set against a backdrop of awe-inspiring mountains, lakes, and jungles is sure to satiate any traveller’s appetite. In Kathmandu Valley alone, there are seven groups of monuments highlighted by UNESCO for their historic and artistic value: The Durbar Squares of Hanuman Dhoka (Kathmandu), Patan and Bhaktapur, the Buddhist stupas of Swayambhu and Bouddhanath, and the Hindu temples of Pashupati and Changu Narayan. The other three UNESCO World Heritage Sites are Sagarmatha National Park which includes Mount Everest, Chitwan National Park in the Terai region, and Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha.

If you love the view of mountains or love to climb them, Nepal should be at the top of your bucket list. Of the 10 highest mountains in the world, all lying above 8000 metres, 8 are located in Nepal. This includes the world’s tallest mountain – Mount Everest. What’s more, is that you don’t even have to be near the mountain ranges to enjoy the view; you can see the snow-capped peaks even from the Terai. The mountainous geography of this Himalayan Kingdom also makes it the first choice for adventure tours. If you’re looking for adventures beyond the ordinary then Nepal is your destination for river rafting, paragliding, trekking, mountain climbing, kayaking, bungee jumping, mountain flights and so much more. You can also find the world’s most extreme zipline here in Pokhara, Nepal.

Nepal tops several impressive global lists, proving it’s more than just mountains; another key distinction is its geographical diversity. Despite being smaller than most American states, it is the only country in the world that covers such a vast range of altitudes from 59m to 8848m across its narrow width. This unique geographical position is reflected in Nepal’s rich biodiversity. Wildlife tourism is a major draw to the country, as travellers come to see animal species that are unique to Nepal, such as the spiny babbler. If you’re a wildlife photographer, or just passionate about being in nature, you won’t want to miss visiting Nepal.

Over 35 different ethnic groups call Nepal home. This means there are multiple religions, languages, musical influences, and foods. Nepal is a wonderful place to immerse yourself in these different cultures and leave your comfort zone.
Additionally, Nepal is the only place in the world where people worship a living goddess, the Kumari, who lives in Kathmandu’s Durbar Square.

Gautama Buddha, on whose teachings Buddhism was founded, was born in Nepal. Lumbini is one of the holiest places of one of the world’s great religions, and it has remained an important site of Buddhist pilgrimage from as early as the 3rd century BC.

Although Nepalese food is heavily influenced by Chinese and Indian cuisines, the dishes are usually healthier with more vegetables and lean meats. Common ingredients include lentils, tomatoes, potatoes, cumin, garlic, yoghurt, and rice.
Nepal is a very affordable travel destination. Food and accommodation are cheap without compromising on quality, making access to the vast array of World Heritage Sites available for anyone.
